A.CAMPOS (CENTER FOR ADVANCED AEROSPACE D TECHNOLOGIES - CATEC), A.ZORRILLA, F.LASAGNI

This work reports on a dimensional analysis of a CFRP sandwich part, together with the application of calibration method for an computed tomography (CT)system. A reference standard has been dimensioned using a XYZ coordinate measurements and then analyzed by CT.

24.3.2-R15 AN APPROXIMATE ANALYTIC SOLUTION FOR THE STRESSES AND DISPLACEMENTS OF THIN-WALLED ORTHOTROPIC BEAMS SUBJECTED TO TORSION

B.PLAZIBAT (UNIVERSITY OF SPLIT), R.PAVAZZA, A.MATOKOVIC

An approximate solution for the stresses and displacements according to the theory of torsion with influence of shear is given. The solutions are given in the analytic form. The unidirectional orthotropic beams with double symmetrical cross-section are considered.

24.3.2-R16 INFLUENCE OF RESIDUAL STRESSES ON THE FAILURE OF THE FIRST PLIES IN COMPOSITES LAMINATES [02/θ2]S

Z.WEN (UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY OF TROYES), XL.GONG

The current work aims to study the residual stresses in composite laminates. After determining the residual stresses in composite laminates using incremental hole drilling method, the residual stresses effects on the failure of the first plies is investigated.

24.3.3-R15 FINITE ELEMENT PREDICTION OF RESIN POCKET GEOMETRIES AROUND OPTICAL FIBERS EMBEDDED IN LAMINATED COMPOSITES

N.LAMMENS (UGENT), G.CHIESURA, E.VOET, G.LUYCKX, W.VAN PAEPEGEM et al.

This work presents a F.E. technique allowing the accurate prediction of resin pocket geometries in composites. The implementation relies on material models and elements available in all commercial F.E. codes. Very good correspondence is found between F.E. and microscopic cross-sections.

24.3.3-R16 MECHANICALLY TUNABLE COLOR DISPLAY OF PHOTONIC CRYSTALS AND SHAPE MEMORY POLYMER COMPOSITES

SB.HONG (SEOUL NATIONAL UNIVERSITY), TH.KANG, WR.YU

Photonic crystals have great potential as color displays or microsensors. Mechanically tunable color display was studied via shape memory polymer precursors using infiltration method. The contact angle measurement using fiber tensiometer and spectophotometry were used for characterization of samples.

24.3.4-R15 DETECTION OF INCIPIENT HEAT DAMAGE IN AIRCRAFT COMPOSITES USING ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE MEASUREMENTS

R.ONG (RMIT UNIVERSITY), CH.WANG

Changes in electrical resistivity were monitored in IM7/977-3 composite specimens up to 100°C above the cure temperature. An increase in the electrical conductivity through the thickness reveals a promising technique for detecting incipient heat damage in carbon fibre composites.

24.3.4-R16 PROBLEM OF STRESS CONCENTRATION AND DEFORMATION IN THE USE OF MULTILAYER GFRP (GLASS FIBRE REINFORCED POLYMER) IN BEARING STRUCTURES

T.STEFIC (UNIVERSITY OF J.J.STROSSMAYER IN OSIJEK, FACULTY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING OSIJEK), A.JURIC, P.MAROVIC

Paper analyses problem concerning concentrated stress in multilayer GFRP carriers. Due to concentration of stress collapse occurs much sooner than the material stress peak is achieved. A comparison of the results and a proposal for the design calculation is shown.

24.3.5-R15 A STUDY ON THE DETECTION PERFORMANCE OF MULTI-AXIAL DETECTION OF PVDF FIBER EMBEDDED SMART POLYMER STRUCTURES

S.HWANG (ANDONG NATIONAL UNIVERSITY), SS.KIM, HY.HWANG

In this study, the PVDF fiber embedded PDMS structure was developed as the flexible tactile sensor for detecting the multi-axial loads. Several methods to arrange the PVDF fibers in the PDMS were considered.

24.3.5-R16 AN EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF NEAR-INFRARED PROPERTIES OF POLYPROPYLENE AND COMPOSITE MATERIAL CONTAINING POLYPROPYLENE AND GLASS FIBERS

D.HAKOUME (LABORATOIRE DE THERMOCINÉTIQUE DE NANTES , UNIVERSITY OF NANTES), LA.DOMBROVSKY, D.DELAUNAY, B.ROUSSEAU

Polymer composite materials are nowadays widely used in structures. An effect of elaboration conditions of semi-crystalline polypropylene and glass fiber reinforced polypropylene on near-infrared optical properties is studied on the basis of spectral measurements of both normal-hemispherical reflectance and transmittance.

24.3.6-R15 MONITORING OF STRAINS IN CFRP DURING MECHANICAL TESTING USING FIBER BRAGG GRATING SENSORS

R.FERNÁNDEZ (CENTER FOR ADVANCED AEROSPACE TECHNOLOGIES - CATEC), N.GUTIÉRREZ, F.LASAGNI

Mechanical tests are carried out on CFRP samples using different strain measurements configurations. Embedded and bonded FBG sensors are used for recording strains during tensile, compression and flexion tests. Results are compared against conventional gauges and digital image correlation records.

24.3.6-R16 INFLUENCE OF GRIPPING CONDITIONS ON COMPRESSION TESTING

R.CANO (UNIVERSIDAD DE SEVILLA)

The goal of this experimental study is to observe how the compressive characterization of a unidirectional laminate carbon/epoxy could be affected by using different test configurations.
